My Luck w/ Make-up Artists

I don't have very good experiences with make-up artists. Do you guys remember this make-up disaster? 17 years of make-up "experience" and this is what she did to my face. :( Thankfully, it wasn't my wedding day but because of that experience, i decided that when it was my turn to get married, I wouldn't cheap out on my make-up artist b/c after all, you get what you pay for. (read more about that experience here)

I was very happy with my wedding make-up as my make-up artist knew what would suit my face, she made me feel comfortable and most important of all, she had the skill. When we got to the Philippines for Reception #2, it was a different story. For starters, I didn't know who the make-up artist was and we didn't get a trial session. Let's just say at the end of it, I was close to tears because...

I looked like a ghost with a very white face
and a white dress on!

He powdered my face like there was no tomorrow, he made my eyes smaller and when he put fake eye lashes on me, he doused the lashes with glue so I had glue all over my lids and to top it all off, he pointed a hair dryer to my face to dry the lash glue. Yes. He also did my hair (i wish you could see the back of my hair in the photo above) and used a straightening iron to curl it which I know can be done but by the time he was finished, my hair was all frizzy and it just looked like I hair sprayed my hair stiff and folded it a few different directions in an attempt to create curls. Oh and not to mention, his hand smelled like cigarettes and fish. Thankfully, our photographer did a great job making the damage look minimal in our photos. :P

Have you had bad experiences
with make-up artists?

I've never had my MU done by a real artist but I love your MU in Vancouver. You look stunning and gorgeous. Ah sorry about the Philippines experience, maybe a difference in culture and MU style? A lot of Cambodian women use a ton of powder on their faces but that's not so big in the States.

I'm sorry about your horrid makeup experience! I have the same problem with having other people put makeup on me. I had my makeup done by a MAC makeup artist and she made me look SO washed out. And I've had other artists at the Dior counter who claimed they had experience with Asian eyes then proceed to fill the entire eye area up to my eyebrows and make me look so ridiculous. I only trust myself for makeup.

oh goodness, i'm sorry to hear about your horrible experience for your second reception! You have a lot of patience though, I think I would have said "no" the moment I smelled his hands!

However despite the disaster, you do look lovely in your photos!

yes yes yes!!! i think it is very difficult to ask anyone for makeup at least he or she knows you very well... like wedding, it's just one time experience, so i think it's hard... i thought i wish i was a model having my makeup artist every day in that way i don't have to worry for it. haha

mine was actually 70% satisfaction... for NY and Japan. In NY, i think my hair was not that good as I thought and... in Japan, I didn't like the way my eyebrows were and ...photos were not good, which i think was too bad... and many more... haha

you look beautiful!
i never had my makeup done professionally before, but i always wanted to try. You have a really good photographer, i can't see any flaws of which you pointed out!

I've never had my make up done by a paid MUA, but i've tried the ocassional MAC/ Sephora/ Department store MUA and experience = bad...

It's hard to find a MUA that knows how to work with asian eyes... if i had paid for the service, i would be in tears... they almost always tried to fake a crease to "open" up my eyes. What's funny is I always warn them about it, and they insist it's gonna turn out amazing... when they finish you can tell they're not confident about the results .... *sigh*

I rather trial and error versus pay for a bad experience... but like you mentioned I like the make up you had on in Vancouver more then the on in Philippines. At least you know you can count on the Vancouver MUA next time you have a fancy event =]

Eek! That's why I think trial sessions are important! I haven't had any super horrible experiences with makeup artists, but I never had great ones either. Lucky for me my sis helps me out with makeup stuff whenever I attend friends' weddings. I also have a couple of makeup artist friends for future reference! :)

ughhh... that sucks! i remember the first time i went to nordstrom to get my makeup done, the lady there did my makeup a whole shade darker than my regular face color, and then i bought the compact, and after that i decided that i would never go back to that counter again... :(

I know a lot of Malay wedding MUAs here will go nutso with the blush! Haha...
I've only had make up artists for dance performances so the makeup I get is always dramatic but I (thankfully) suitable and not crazy!

I'm sorry for you bad experience with the MUA in Philippines. When our wedding planner was looking for a makeup artist for our wedding day. I specifically requested for someone who has experiences in working with Asians. I wasn't disappointed when she found me a ex-MAC artist. I had a trial and was pleased. My makeup for my reception back home was done without a trial but I found the MUA via some friends and saw her portfolio. It all went well. I guess I was lucky.

Omg I feel so bad for you T_T nothing SUCKS more than people fucking up your face/hair when it's really important to you. Especially for a reception/photoshoot. Seriously.. I HATE when people claim to know EVERYTHING about makeup and in reality they got no freaking idea what they're doing. They claim to be a 'makeup artist' and all, but they don't even have a damn certificate to prove it. >_>"

omgosh i'm so sorry to hear about your awful makeup experience!!! nothing sucks more than someone messing up your makeup.. it's amazing how makeup can make someone look so good and bad at the same time hahah.

Oh my that's crazy first of all, but you know what hunny you look fantastic in both pictures. It's hard to put makeup for a photoshoot because the makeup is completely different and reflects differently. However, I think that you look great on both days even though the filipino one made you uncomfortable. You've also got a fantastic photographer!

You look beautiful there! I was kinda lucky my wedding makeup turned out how I liked it. The only thing I would have changed were the eye liners. I decided to have lash extensions because I didn't want any false lashes mishaps. But all my makeup artist woes are definitely at the makeup counter.. I don't really like getting my makeup at the counters though unless I'm trying to find the right shade so it hasn't happened in a long time!

I remember reading about that other sad makeup artist. And I'm sorry to hear about having such a crappy guy for your second reception :(
In all honesty though, I wouldn't have been able to tell that he wasn't that great because of your amazing photographer! :) So MEGA props to her!!! :D

Wanna know another thing?
No matter how crappy or white you makeup may have come out, you still look beautiful. I know makeup can do wonders, but if you've got a beautiful face, it's hard to mess that up :]

Dana

your makeup looks great on the left!! i've had my makeup done only once...for prom...at MAC. clearly that makeup artist had no idea how to do makeup on an Asian person. i looked like a drag queen LOL

But you look beautiful in the second photo!

The fish-smelling hands had me laughing. Hahahaha! Poor you.

I guess the moral of this story is really...don't go cheap on the photographer!!

You look amazing in both photos...and all the time. :D

yikes! i hear you on that...but thankfully, so far, i've not had such bad experiences with make-up artists, although i rarely go for professional make-up because I just have trust issues! :/

but i have to say your photographer is def very talented because if you didn't mention all that, i wouldn't know by looking at the photo (R)

I remember that makeup post... that was awful! Anyway, when I got married, I was so worried about looking bad because of bad makeup but I was super lucky with my MUA! She was amazing! Yours did an amazing job too! You look good in both weddings but I love you most in your Canada wedding...

the sad part about my "bad make up experience" was with my own friend!!!! eeep! we threw a party & she said she'll do my make up for me (she studied cosmetology) & she ended up making my eyes look wayyy smaller as well! -______-
