...But I Didn't Ask to Look Like a Geisha.

Make up gurus (or anyone reading this), i hope you're sitting down as i'm about to reveal some cringe worthy make-up. In my last post, I mentioned that I went to a small, small town up north as I was a bridesmaid for my best friends wedding. I don't really wear make-up very often so I thought that since this is a special occasion, I would get a "professional" to do my make-up.

When I was introduced to the woman who'd be doing my make-up, I was slightly worried as she was much older, she didn't really look put together and her make-up was nothing to write home about. I made small talk with her and asked "how long have you been doing make-up?" she beamed and said "17 years, i absolutely love doing this". The whole time I was getting make-up done, my back was facing the mirror so I couldn't see what was going on. As she was finishing up, she kept saying "oh, i better get others opinion on what i've done". Now i'm not a make-up expert, but that automatically raised a red flag to me b/c it showed that she wasn't confident in her work.

THE FINISHED PRODUCT: a caked on face that was at least 2 shades lighter than my natural skin tone and if you study my face close enough, you'll notice that my forehead has brown spots on it from poor blending. *sigh* The funny thing was that one of the other make-up artists kept asking me several times if i was happy with it and i just said yes b/c i didn't want to make anymore suggestions (i'd already made a few at this point)...but she insisted and said that i was really white under my eyes. hahaha! Even after she 'fixed' it - one of the other bridesmaids still had to bronze the heck out of my face to make the brown spots disappear and make me a little less white. Maybe it was a 'small town' thing and they weren't used to putting make-up on an Asian person (the make up artist was Caucasian)???

If it was any other occasion, it'd be fine but i paid money for this AND it was for my best friends wedding where we'd be taking lots of photos!!! Grrrrr! Oh well, at least it wasn't my wedding - otherwise, i probably would've cried. haha!

I wore the bear paws to distract you from my white and brown spotted face. haha!

Do you have any make-up horror stories?

You should've said something! Make up artists usually get paid a lot for weddings. I always do my own make up now... I don't trust a lot of make up artists.

oh my gosh!!!! i get you!!! i totally get you! for some reason... older asian ladies like to whiten up the face!

like i went to this banquet once and two of my best friends got their make up done. even though, they didn't want to it was their parents decision to do so... so they did.

and rigth when people saw them the comment they got was "wow.. you guys went all out." and im saying their face was really powdered with WHITE! lol. it was so freaking sad. anyway... you're so nice for saying you're okay with the what she did. oh man... if i were you i would tell her to do it over again! lol. kidding. i prolli wouldn't im too scared xD

it's always so difficult to find our skin tone colour make up in non-asian country. here i blend two colours to get close enough to my colouring.

but then again, my skin colour is quite difficult to match.

every time i go to the store and ask them to match my colouring to some foundation or whatever, they end up giving me one tone darker and i always look somewhat tan with a new foundation - hate it.

Omg! haha! I had an experience like that. For prom in high school, I went to a hairdresser/makeup artist and she made me look like a crazy Asian princess....totally not what me (as a tomboy) wanted. :( I had a bun with braids coming out everywhere and a tiny little barrette CROWN....a CROWN!!! [O.O] And my makeup....oh gosh....that was craaaaziness. :(

RYC: I will DEFINITELY visit you one day!!! [>_<] Ugggghhhh I want suuuushi. I still haven't satisfied my craving....I've had it since SATURDAY! [O.o]

O-em-gee. :X I am soo sorry that happened! I have a similar horror story (though not as bad) but one time I got a free makeover where the makeup artist clearly didn't know what to do with my Asian eyes so I came out looking all Kabuki.

haha. i've experiened that too, and like you i couldn't say something "/ that's why if ever you should rent a makeup artist for an event, get a sample makeup done first! :p

Awwww... that sucks that the makeup artist didn't do a good job on you! Did she at least put powder on? I feel like if I finish my makeup off with powder and finishing powder, it makes my face look more natural.

MizzJ said...

hahahah omg I'm sorry, but that looks horrible!! You should get a refund for that haha.

WOW, I can't believe that happened! Did she do anyone else? x_x

PS, I actually love dirty snow, LOL. I like it when it's all mushy.. I gather it into one pile and I jump in it! I love the 'SPLAT' sound it makes!

ugh good, I would have thrown a fit...especially if I had to pay for it >_> It's sad but true that a lot of makeup artists only are because they 'say' they are. Amazing how that lady is still in business :\

Once I went to a makeup counter at JCpenny in HS to get my makeup done for the first time EVER and the first thing she said to me was...."Your eyes aren't made for makeup." I then proceeded to 1.) not buy anything and 2.) avoid makeup for the next 5 yeas xD

Kalmo said...

Aw you're so nice! I would have def. said something or demanded a refund haha because salons are expensive and they should have professional people. Whenever I go to the counters, sales assistants always cake way too much stuff on my face, bleh.

it's a hard situation to deal with....i would've wanted to wash my face but probably feel really bad about it. and of course you don't want to cause any drama because it's your best friend's wedding.

i hope the other pictures turn out well!

Yikes! I thought the spots were photoshopped in before I read the post. Wow, it looks like you had a one-shade-fits-all beautician. I guess Williams Lake is so far north that nobody there ever tans. Had you removed all the make-up in that picture of you freezing in the snow? You looked like your normal self in that. Maybe that's proof nothing can put a damper on your natural patikym-adorability! Thank your parents. =)

I'm glad to hear your brother did the same sorts of things the boys in my neighborhood did. I tried to make a bow and arrow, but failed. I did find a weed that grew straight and made for a great spear--it was like balsa wood, very light and harmless, but it flew perfectly.

About the mushroom, Billy did something bad. The first time, I just gave him a warning. The second time I punched him in the shoulder and told him if he did it again, I was going to make him eat a mushroom (and that they were poison--they weren't). Well, he did it a 3rd time, so I had no choice. I shoved a mushroom from my yard in his mouth and made him keep it in there a while--I didn't make him swallow it. It sounds worse then it was and he deserved it. I should do a post so you get the full story. It sounds so bad!

haha aww that means a lot to me! and OMGOSHHH IM SO JEALOUS! how old are you? i got my first one last year when i was 17 ; was sooo upset, and then i went crazy with brushing my teeth but still got another cavity!

i blame my braces from before

Unknown said...

Ooo that'd be a good idea, maybe mini macrons in little gauze pouches as favors? You could even make them the theme colors of your wedding ^_^

Mish said...

Oh nooo! :( They should have cleaned your face and started again! : < Wow, how did she get away with being a makeup artist for 17 years haha. :O

I have the same experience sometimes with hairdressers. I feel like I should place my trust in their hands and let them do their job, but some people just dont have a clue! ><

Despite her bad job, you still managed to take a cute photo hun hehe! x

lolol omg Kymmm... this made me angry and LOL at the same time. geeebus... thats the worst make up job ive ever seen a "professional" do haha

Ah Ate Kym I feel ur pain! My year 12 formal(prom) make-up...shades darker and stopped square at my jaw ~_~ caked on so thick it took me 30+mins to get it off AND my face still wasn't make up free...I felt really ugly but I didn't know how to do my own so I dealt with it :(

my mother has this friend who always does my make up for important school event.. she always gets my hair and lipstick wrong but i'm too polite not too say anything.. so i redid everything when i got to school.haha

oh you are so lucky! grr dentist stuff is such a horror i go exactly every 6 months for cleaning and a year for x ray. . . i swear all that radiation isn't good. . .

luckily i feel my mouth now :)

makeup artists are so objective; i had one who "bronzed" me with orange blush; i looked like a pumpkin :S.

That's terrible how the "professional" MUA made you look. If I had more time, I'd go crazy and demand my money back so i can go to a local store and buy makeup and do it myself! LOL She didn't make you look that bad at all (honestly) but the fact that you felt it was too white and not blended right... frustrating. You still look great regardless! She should stop doing makeup! Her 17 yrs are up!! :p

woah... who did the bride's make-up? haha you're right, at least its not your wedding. ;p I always do my make-up to avoid things like these.hehe but you're still pretty. ;)

I wonder how she survived 17 years of being a make-up artist..? :/ Gosh, she lucky YOU were her customer. If that happened to people like my sister (just an example) the woman would've had another thing coming.

Anyway, at least one good thing that came out of this experience is that you now know who NOT to get for your wedding! ;)

Oh no, that is so sad... And really sucky as well! I had the same experience on our Elementary graduation. My makeup was soooo bad that I am kinda glad the photos from that day got burnt x_x Imagine what damage it did to the self-esteem of a twelve-year old girl! x_x But you were so nice for grinning and bearing it Kym! I would've thrown a hissy fit if it was me!

Anyway, I know how to apply makeup on other people, but other people shouldn't trust me to do theirs, they might look as if someone punched them in the face lol.

Wwwwwwwwwwwow..fail lol.

Mish said...

Hey sweetie, just letting you know I tagged you in my latest post!

If I were you I will reapply the makeup by myself LOL.

omg Kym you looked like my aunt who is obsessed with plastic surgery. what a fail! and to spend 17 years doing something you fail so much at! haha. by the way I followed you on twitter, so I can stalk you some more, ya know.

this happened to me when i attended my oath taking, after i passed the dental board examinations. my friend and i booked the same make-up artist who did our make up for the yearbook pictures, but i dunno what happened... we booked him/her cus we looked great during the grad pics, but my face was too white for my oath taking...

i hated it! even my hair was bad!!!

MK said...

poor you. Did you hire her or was she recommmend by the bride? :( i thought professional MUA usually do a pre-look before the actualy day in case something bad like this happened?

Roxy said...

omg you poor thing! i would have cried! LOL but i'm kind of like you are too where i don't really wanna say anything to hurt that older lady's feelings but still you were taking pictures! :( boo now i know to bring my own make up anywhere! LOL

TG said...

You look so white :O

amileinherheels said...

Oh noo :( I've been there... I should show you the pic. I look fine without flash, but with flash I look like a ghost -.- I should've done the makeup myself. It was for a wedding too.

P.S I Love the pic with the snow and boots!!) You looked so cute!

Kate Gene said...

Let me start out by saying you are a very pretty girl! You always look put together.

Now that I have that out of the way... OMG!!!! HA HA HA!!!! I literally laughed out loud at your blog title and geisha face. XD I'm like you; I wouldn't have really said anything to the artist either. What sucks is, wedding make-up is costly. Even though it wasn't your wedding, it was still a big day for you, too. How frustrating!

Well, if it makes you feel any better, your story made my day! LOL!

"at least it wasn't my wedding" X-D !
Always looking on the bright side ` it's great ! Hahaha.

I don't tend to trust make up artists in malls etc cause' from my experience they always tend to pack on the make up and apply it on in a really unflattering way. I don't think they experiment and ask enough questions from the client about how they want something done. I often feel like they're too presumptuous because they're the make up "expert" but perhaps it's because i'm bitter from that one time experience ;-P What will you do for your wedding ? ;-O
