What Kind of Shopper Are You?

from my clothing line (herro hachi)'s look book

Last Saturday, my husband and I spent the afternoon walking around Downtown Vancouver with friends. Since I had gone on a little shopping trip the weekend previous, i told myself that I wouldn't buy anything that day and i was solid on my decision... until I saw a beautiful knit sweater at plen+y. I stood in the store and stared at this sweater and started doing math calculations in my head and battling it out with myself (you don't need this... you have lots of sweaters at home....). I held it up for my friend to see and her response was "I could totally see you wearing that". Her husband and my husband (both bad shopping influences!) said "just get it if you really want it, otherwise you'll keep thinking about it". I quickly snapped out of it, put the sweater back on the rack, hurried us out of the store, and went next door to buy a smoothie instead.

I realized there are several types of shoppers and I have been each and every one of these shoppers at different stages in my life.

The Buy Now, Think Later Shopper: You see it on the manikin, it's beautiful, you can totally see yourself wearing it, you buy it without a second thought, go home to try it on and realize it either looks horrible on you or doesn't fit you.

The Fad Diet Shopper: You realize you have a shopping problem so you stop shopping cold turkey. One week later, a beautiful pair of shoes breaks you and you end up leaving the mall with 10 bags.

The Peer Pressure Shopper: You bought something expensive so to justify your purchase and make yourself feel better, you convince your friend that they need to buy something too.

The Compliment Eating Shopper: Your friend says "OMG! That is so cute on you, it totally makes your butt look hot" and you head straight to the cashier without a second thought.

The Practical Shopper: You like it, you'll sleep on it, you'll think about it the next day, think about whether or not you really need it, think about the value for money, think about other more important things you could buy for the same price, sleep on it again and end up not buying it.

The Leave It To Fate Shopper: If it's at the branch closer to home, in my size, and it's on sale… then it's totally meant to be.

In last weekends case, I was the "Leave It To Fate" shopper deciding that if it was available in the branch closer to home, it was meant to be mine. I went to that branch the next day and it wasn't there. (boo.)

I'm a mix of:

The Fad Diet Shopper
The Practical Shopper and
The Leave It To Fate Shopper

But most of the time, I'm a fad diet shopper. :(

I'm the practical/leave it to fate shopper. Although there are times when I will treat myself after thinking about it. Or if its something I don't really need and its on sale then I'll take it!

Right now I'm the Practical Shopper and Leave it to Fate shopper but in my highschool days I was definitely the Buy now and Think Later shopper and peer pressure shopper hahahaha I know myself too well and thus will never be a cold turkey shopper either. But to be truthful, I don't shop much in Vancouver because I know I'll probably hit up Asia soon and one I'm there, all the rules go out the window and I spend every cent in my "shopping budget" for the trip LOL I also feel double the pressure when shopping on vacation because it's usually it's a "now or never" feeling!!!

i have to say i've been through all those stages as well. but i think i will have to say i'm generally more the buy now think later shopper. terrible of me, sometimes i don't even try it on!

like you, I've been all those types of shopper too :) It depends on my moolah situation. xD What's constant though is my criteria for buying...a piece should be an investment piece...it doesn't have to be expensive...it's just have to be something I could easily remix with the other outfits I have in my closet! :)

I'm more a spontaneous / Practical shopper .. they're completely the opposite but it really depend on my mood!

I'm a mix of all of these but lately, I've been a practical shopper. Although if I haven't shopped for a while, I'll go and drop tons of money on a shopping trip.. basically making up for the time I didn't shop. :S

The only one I am NOT is the peer pressure and compliment eating shopper.

hahaha I've been all of those at some point I think! Depends on how I feel about the item in question ;)

Umm, a little bit of everything, I guess? :D But I've been reining myself in the last few months. All I've been using are gift cards so that's good for my budget :)

I'm not any of these actually! I normally quickly find some clothes I like, check the price, try them on if they're not too expensive, and if it fits nicely, I buy them. Plus, I usually shop alone because I don't want to be influenced x)

I am totally a practical shopper haha

I'm very much Leave it To Fate coz even if my calculations tell me I'll have to eat grass if I buy this item, I'll then be like "I'll figure out a way to earn cash after this". haha!

i'm hands down practical shopper. sometimes i wish i wasn't because i need pampering too but then in the end... i'm thinking i really like this, and then i think and think and think about it until it drives me crazy. jk... but i do think about it a lot .

I'm a practical shopper for one reason.... don't have enough money for shopping! this is why I hate being a full-time student... mom gives me enough money for school and nothing for anything else....

Yep, you're definitely right about allllll those and I don't think you've left anything out. When I use to go shopping a lot, I was pretty much either the "buy now, think later" shopper and the "fad diet" shopper. Basically, I'm kind of impulsive :P

Richelle said...

You forgot the impulsive, never think twice, then goes home and cries, shopper hHAHA. That's totally me. Minus the crying. I keep that to myself. It's gotten to the point where I'm hiding stuff from myself. HAHA.

I love the lookbook picture on the top!

i can very much relate to the compliment eating shopper, practical shopper, and leave it to fate shopper... HAHAHA! :) and booo that you didn't find the sweater again! :(

It definitely depends on who I'm with; if I'm solo, I'm more of a Practical Shopper or Leave It To Fate; otherwise, I'm a Compliment Eating shopper because I always value what people think of something so if they say a dress looks good on me ... there goes my debit card haha.

Hope you find what you were looking for! Pssssst ... coming up with initials designs for your redesign, can't wait to get the ball rolling! Just need to make sure everything's good with Wordpress (and remember your password lol).

i would say im use to be a good mix of the buy now, think later shopper & peer pressure shopper. as ive gotten older ive most definitely become the practical shopper. i think twice..even three times before shopping and most of what i do buy has to last me throughout the seasons & trends. i stick to basics & solid colors.

DID MY COMMENT GO THROUGH?
LOL, if not, i'll type it out again, haha.

Miss Melissa said...

OMG. IT DIDN'T. So, as I was saying...

I have experience all of the above!

There was one day when I went shopping with my friend. She complimented on every outfit that I had tried on. So I then bought all items. When I got home I regretted it because I believe there is something about fitting room mirrors that trick your eyes! Either that, or friends purposely do that to make you broke! But, lesson learned, I am now a "Leave It To Fate" shopper! Woooooot. :)

OH WAIT, NO, I meant to say, "The Practical Shopper." Haha, I am actually a very impatient person to be "The Leave It To Fate Shopper." I'd just grab and go!

Anyway, sorry about my streak of comments. I hope you don't think I'm annoying now. LOL.

I definitely used to be a buy now shopper, but lately seem to be more practical... maybe one day I'll be a fate shopper! I just love shopping so much!

Ela said...

Buy Now, Think Later Shopper. It's probably because I use my mother's money so I don't think twice about buying stuff I don't really need :(
