"It's Just Our Culture..."

You know what bothers me? When CULTURE is used as an excuse.

I'm going to arrive an hour later than our agreed meeting time but don't be mad...
it's just our culture.
I'm going to talk to you in a demeaning manner but i'm not trying to be rude...
it's just our culture.
I'm going to show up to your party without RSVP'ing, it's not inconsideration...
it's just our culture.
I'm going to gossip about you but i don't mean any harm by it...
it's just our culture.
I'm going to tell you you look fat even though I know you have image issues...
it's just our culture.
I'm not allowed to date you because you're (insert race) but don't be offended...
it's just our culture.
I'm going to physically and emotionally abuse you but don't cry...

When have you heard 'culture' used as an excuse?

so true..I hate it when people use culture as an excuse to cover their nega-personalities/attitudes.

The culture angle throws me a little, except for #1 I've never heard those things blamed on culture (Panama time). I grew up surrounded by a lot of numbers 2, 3, 4, 5, and 7--and it had nothing to do with any culture, just small, selfish people. I have often heard, "That's just how I (or he/she) am", which is total BS.

You know, murderers can't help it, that's just how they are. Or maybe it's just their culture!!!

Give me their names Kym and I'll throw REAL eggs at whoever is doing any of those things to you.

PS - On a positive note, if K an I ever renew our vows, I am definitely going to arrive on a crowned, white horse. That looked so cool.

LOL. If anyone tries that on me maybe I'll just go "I'm gonna punch you on the nose and kick your ass outta here but don't take it personally, it's just my culture."

I haven't heard the culture excuse in scenarios you described actually... Personally, I've just heard a culture excuse as a justification to only hang out with people of your "own" culture because it's "easier." -_-;; Not that that's a more pleasant scenario or anything.

Omg... my ex-friend used to do that all the time. Only she would diss others of the same culture only to repeat the actions herself. Hence, we are no longer friends.

hahah I love Ric's comment! This is just an excuse people use to be lazy in their behaviour I think. It's like this quote I heard once that said that what we believe to be human nature, in actuality is human habit.

Tooooootally. Absolutely.

Unfortunately, sometimes I don't understand other's culture so I can't judge them for something I know about.

i have heard number 1 gazillion times. it should be the other way around since our country is hours advance in time zone. haha!

the number 6 is just too much. i have friends with relationship problem just because of that. and there is another branch - religion.

Culture, tradition, religion are constantly abused for someone's agenda. It's all too common :(

wow, I didn't know les filipinos also have "filipino time" haha... because yeah, being late is kind of normal here, seriously. Too bad (?) I am one of those who always come on time -__- no matter how late I intend myself to be, I'll end up the waiting one. seriously, gosh... -_____-"

ahhh, I really hate all these things mentioned above, unpunctuality, gossiping, no reply. HATE them!

I have just finished the cross-cultural communication. I do know some cultures really embrace the first one on list (being late 1hr that promised/supposed), for 'my culture' its ridiculous

i agree! it is way too often leaned on as an excuse. <3 EverRubyGirl.blogspot.com

oh this is funny because the boyfriend and I were just talking about this sometime last week. He made a comment about how he noticed that most Filipinos are usually pretty rude. I tried to explain to him that I'm sure it's not that they're rude it's that they just sort of grew up to be up front, and yes I mentioned that it seems like it's in "OUR CULTURE". I told him it was inexcusable though. I feel like yea, it's common in our culture, but it doesn't make it an excuse.

Hi kym!!!

I don't say this to my friends but to my darling. I just mean to say it to him when we have a quarrel. haha
